2002 Big South Conference Champions
Winthrop captured its first ever
Big South Title with a 1-0 over-
time victory against #13 Coastal
Carolina as Franco Wakhisi was
set up for a 1v1 by Dee Vydra
and slotted the ball into the
corner for the golden goal. The
game was played on Eagle Field.
It was the second victory over
nationally ranked Coastal within
a two-week span as Winthrop
claimed the regular season and
postseason titles. The team made
its first trip to the NCAA College
Cup as it ran into a tough North
Carolina team and suffered a
6-0 loss in the opening round. It
was also the school’s first 15-win
season. Offensively the Eagles
finished 5th in the nation in scor-
ing at 2.87 goals per game.
