Michael King
Kaley Viola
Kaley Viola, former Winthrop volleyball standout, was
hired as an assistant coach in August of 2013.
Viola played for Winthrop from 2007 to 2010 all under
former coach Sally Polhamus. Viola finished her ca-
reer with 3,323 total attacks which ranks her seventh
all time for the Eagles. She also accumulated 1,054
kills, 996 digs and 163 total blocks. She was also twice
named to the Big South 2nd Team All-Conference in
2009 and 2010.
Viola coached from 2010-2013 with the Rock Hill Vol-
leyball Club having coached 15-1 Power Plus, 14-1
Power Team and 14-3 Club Team.
In May of 2011 Viola graduated with a degree in Psychology. Viola returned to
school the following August and completed her Master's Degree in Sports & Fit-
ness Administration in May of 2013 and worked as a graduate assistant in the
Strength and Conditioning department in Winthrop athletics.
Michael King was hired as an assistant volleyball coach at Winthrop
in July of 2013.
King comes to Winthrop from the University of Portland where he
was the Associate Head Coach since 2008. With Portland, King
helped guide the team to its best conference record in more than 15
years.
Prior to joining Portland's staff, he served on the staffs at Eastern
Washington (1998-99, 2002), Concordia (2000) and Alabama-
Birmingham (2001-02). At Eastern Washington he helped guide the
Eagles to the NCAA Tournament in 1998 and 1999.
King also has experience coaching on the scholastic level where he
coached at David Douglas High School in Portland, OR from 2004-2008.
As a collegiate player, King played for Santa Barbara City College and the University of Califor-
nia Santa Barbara.
He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Western Oregon and his Masters of Arts from
Concordia.
King is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and the National Strength and
Conditioning Association. He is also a former instructor for the National Institute of Speed, Agility
and Quickness.
King's wife, Erin, was a four-time national champion in synchronized swimming at Ohio State and
later served as the head coach of the Puerto Rico National synchronized swimming team and
recently won two Gold Medals at the World Master Games.
