Tom Hickman
Athletic Director
Tom Hickman, the dean of
Big South Conference athletic
directors, is in his 19th year as
Winthrop’s director of athletics.
Prior to his appointment to
that post in 1996, Hickman was
the associate athletic director
for seven years.
The North Carolina native
is a graduate of Wake Forest
where he received his bach-
elor’s degree in 1970 and his
master’s degree in 1974.
Hickman is a member of the
National Association of Col-
legiate Directors of Athletics
(NACDA).
He is a former member of the
NCAA Div. I Management Council,
the NCAA Legislative Review and
Interpretations Committee, and
the NCAA Minority Opportunities
and Interests Committee. He
formerly served on the NCAA Div.
I Championships/Sports Manage-
ment Cabinet.
He serves on the Big South
Conference Budget and Basket-
ball Tournament Committees.
He and his wife Karen, are the
parents of two sons, Wesley and
Brett, a daughter, Lauren, and a
granddaughter, Aubrey Simone
