Winthrop Hall of Fame member Nield
Gordon served as the first men’s
basketball coach at Winthrop from
1978-86
Gregg Marshall captured seven Big
South Championships and made sev-
en NCAA Tournament appearances in
nine seasons with the Eagles. Mar-
shall was inducted into the Winthrop
Hall of Fame this past spring. During
his tenure the team had six 20-win
seasons and led the Eagles to their
only NCAA Tournament victory in
2007 over Notre Dame, 74-64.
Randy Peele coached the Eagles five seasons
and led them to a Big South Championship in
2008 and 2010.
